Mindfulness is a learnable set of skills, involving ongoing, moment-by-moment focused awareness and openness to the here-and-now, without judgment and with acceptance.
Paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.
When practiced over time, mindful meditation offers an alternative to experiential avoidance and inattention and allows clients to relate to internal experience from a broadened perspective-as psychological events, rather than accurate reflections of reality (Batten, Orsillo & Walser 2005). The aim in using Mindfulness in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy would be to help the client to have a different relationship with his or her thoughts, feelings and memories. Mindfulness as a tool thus helps the client to “look at” thoughts, feelings and memories, rather than “buying it”.
