An Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

According to the American Psychological Association, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a research-supported model for the treatment of various conditions such as chronic pain, depression, mixed anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and psychosis.

It is a model of behavioural treatment that emphasises acceptance of emotion and thought, while maintaining a focus on positive behaviour change that is meaningful and consistent with personal values. ACT uses a variety of verbal, experiential and homework techniques, plus mindfulness, to help clients make experiential contact with previously avoided private events (thoughts, feelings, sensations), without excessive verbal involvement and control – and to make powerful life-enhancing choices.

This seminar will explore the ACT basics in theory, with some experiential demonstrations to enhance the basic understanding of ACT processes.
